The Saturday Night Dance

Postby 4LLi3 » Thu Jun 03, 2010 8:47 pm

This is my third time going to AMA. I went Fiday and Saturday in 07, last year, and I plan on going this year. Last year a group of friends and I wanted to stay for the Staurday night dance but my mom wouldn't let us because she said it wouldn't be safe. I'm sixteen now and plan on going with a small group like last year and I'm trying to convince her to let me and my friends stay for the dance. Is it really not age appropriate for myself and better that I not go? I really want to go but unless I can convince my mom that I'll be safe I won't be able to stay.

AMA is dedicated to being family-friendly and the safety of our attendees. That being said, it's up to the individual to act appropriately and use common sense. I'm not aware of any major incidents happening at the Saturday Night Dance at AMA. I've heard stuff happening at other cons, but I think a lot of that was conjecture or half-heard truths. Even then, those were isolated incidents that were brought about by individuals trying to sneak past the rules or being stupid.

Either I or a staff member in charge will get back to you on any rules that may hinder you.

While there have been incidents during dances in the past at many cons, usually they are small and only affected those participating in the prohibitated activity. I have not seen nor heard of an incident that has affected the average con-goer who is following the rules and dancing their heart out.

TL:DR
If you go and follow the rules you should be fine just like during the rest of the con.
If you go and break the rules you might get in trouble with the con and have to deal with the consequences, also like the rest of the con.

The only thing needed to know for the dance really is drink water, it gets annoying hearing each year someone passes out because they dont drink water, its free outside your not gonna miss your favorite song. Your body comes first, its gonna be hot inside because of all the bodies so its good to just go outside for a few minutes.

I will try to convince her, I'm not stupid. I also know to avoid the creepy weapons vendor if he is there again this year...

Still don't have any information, but I'm thinking one of the major hurdles may be curfew. I don't know if the area has a curfew, what time it would be, or if there's special consideration for being in the hotel/convention area.

As far as creepy vendors, let a staff member know so we can deal with it. I know the con chair takes that stuff seriously. Trust me.

As far as "creepy vedors" there is 1 vendor who in the past has been allowed to set up in the dance (selling glowsticks and the like) and I do not know how "creepy" describes him. If by creepy you mean you just think he's weird then that's ok, if by creepy you mean he's doing someting that you feel uncomfortable with, then mention it to a security staff and they will be able to deal with the situation if anything should/can be done.

As far as curfew goes, for the most part the cons get waivers if curfews do exist. A few years back the curfew was a HUGE issue with Richmond but that was mostly on Richmonds side and as such not worth focusing on.

TL:DR
If the vendor does something that makes you uncomfortable (if ANYONE does something that makes you uncomfortable in the whole of the con also) let a security staff know.
I will check with the head of security about the curfew question and get back to you.

Being 16 your curfew in Chesapeake is 12:30am but there are exemptions for community activities and meetings, therefore it will not be an issue.
